Marvel Rivals Modding Persists Despite Season 1 Ban Risks

Despite warnings and a recent crackdown, players of *Marvel Rivals* are still risking account bans by using mods, even after the launch of Season 1. Since the game's successful debut in December, the modding community has been active, creating custom skins like turning Iron Man into Vegeta from *Dragon Ball* and Mantis into a goth character. There's also a popular mod that transforms Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from *Chainsaw Man*.

Last week, with the release of the Fantastic Four and Season 1, *Marvel Rivals* implemented a new mod restriction through asset hash checking. Developer NetEase emphasized to IGN that the game's terms and conditions explicitly prohibit mods, cheats, bots, hacks, or any unauthorized third-party software. NetEase had previously cautioned players about the risks of using mods and reiterated this stance in a statement to IGN: "It is not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned."

Despite these warnings, some players remain undaunted. A workaround for the new restriction has been discovered and is spreading rapidly online. Though it requires more steps than before, it's still within reach for many PC gamers. Modder Prafit, who shared their workaround on Nexus Mods, issued a caution to users: "Use at your own risk," they noted in the mod's description.

"By using this, you are circumventing a system designed to prevent modding from the start of the Season 1 patch. While NetEase has not issued permanent bans as far as we know, no one can predict their future actions," Prafit explained.

Following the introduction of the Fantastic Four characters, new mods have emerged. For instance, Ercuallo's mod transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy from the *One Piece* manga. This Luffy mod has been downloaded over 5,000 times within just two days of its release, according to Nexus Mods statistics.

The ongoing use of mods raises the question of whether NetEase will enforce bans as threatened. So far, no confirmed cases of bans for mod use have surfaced, but the new workarounds might prompt further action from the developers.

NetEase's motivation to ban mods could stem from potential lost revenue from skin sales, concerns over intellectual property, and the possibility that mods could disrupt game balance or performance. Modder Prafit noted that their temporary workaround is best suited for users with high-end PCs.
