"Spectre Divide: Free Shooter Closes Weeks Post-Console Launch"

The free-to-play 3v3 shooter, *Spectre Divide*, is set to be discontinued just six months after its debut in September 2024, and only weeks following its launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Alongside the game, its developer, Mountaintop Studios, will also shut down. This unfortunate news was officially confirmed by Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell via a statement on social media.

“Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat,” Mitchell explained in the post. Despite a promising start with around 400,000 players and a peak concurrent count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms in the first week, the game failed to retain enough active players and generate the necessary revenue to cover ongoing costs. The studio attempted to secure further funding through a publisher, additional investment, or an acquisition but was unsuccessful. Mitchell highlighted the challenging state of the industry as a contributing factor to their closure.

*Spectre Divide* will be taken offline within the next 30 days, and players who spent money since the Season 1 launch will receive refunds. This development contradicts earlier statements from October 2024, where Mitchell assured that the game “isn’t going anywhere,” and claimed that Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support *Spectre Divide* for the long haul.

IGN’s positive preview in August 2024 praised *Spectre Divide* for its innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters during matches. However, the game's swift shutdown adds it to a growing list of live-service game failures, including Rocksteady’s *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and Sony’s *Concord*.
