Splitgate 2: A New Era of Portal Combat

1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. This isn't just an update; it's a complete reimagining built from the ground up.

A Fresh Take on a Classic

The July 18th cinematic trailer showcased Splitgate 2's ambition. CEO Ian Proulx aims for a game with lasting power, stating their goal is to "build a game that can last a decade or more." This vision led to a fundamental shift in design, focusing on a "deep and satisfying gameplay loop" rather than simply replicating the original's formula. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlighted a re-evaluation of the portal mechanic, aiming for a system that rewards skillful players without making it mandatory for success.

Developed in Unreal Engine 5, Splitgate 2 remains free-to-play but introduces a significant new element: a faction system. While core gameplay elements remain, the developers promise a completely refreshed experience. Expect it on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.

The original Splitgate, known for its unique blend of arena shooter and portal mechanics, exploded in popularity after its demo release. Its success led to server upgrades to handle the massive influx of players. After a period of early access, the original game officially launched on September 15, 2022, before development ceased to allow the team to focus on this ambitious sequel.

New Factions, Maps, and More

The trailer introduced the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions: Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). These factions add depth without transforming Splitgate 2 into a hero shooter.

While detailed gameplay remains under wraps until Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer confirms the return of dual-wielding and showcases new maps and weapons. The developers assure fans that the trailer accurately represents the game's visuals and core mechanics.

Expanding the Lore

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will offer comics, character cards, and a faction quiz to deepen player engagement with the game's lore.
