Rocksteady Faces Further Layoffs Following Suicide Squad's Underwhelming Performance

Rocksteady Studios, renowned for the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, has experienced another wave of layoffs, adding to the turmoil following the disappointing reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game's underperformance, reported in February as falling short of sales projections, initially resulted in a significant reduction of the QA team in September – approximately half its staff.

This latest round of job cuts, reported by Eurogamer, extends beyond QA, impacting Rocksteady's programming and art departments. Several anonymous employees confirmed their recent dismissals, highlighting the ongoing repercussions of the game's commercial failure. Warner Bros. remains silent on these developments, mirroring their response to the earlier layoffs.

The financial strain of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is evident, affecting not only Rocksteady but also WB Games Montreal. WB Games Montreal, responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins and Gotham Knights, also announced layoffs in December, many reportedly from the QA team supporting Suicide Squad's post-launch content.

The final DLC, released December 10th, introduced Deathstroke as a playable character, concluding the game's additional content. While a final update is scheduled for later this month, the future of Rocksteady remains uncertain following this setback. The game's underperformance casts a shadow on the studio's otherwise impressive track record of critically acclaimed DC titles, leaving a significant impact in the form of substantial job losses.
