Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the sheer volume of mods.
BG3 Modding Is "Pretty Big," Says CEO Swen Vincke
Mod.io Founder Reports Over 3 Million Mod Installs
Released on September 5th, Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7 has been a massive success. Larian Studios' CEO Swen Vincke tweeted that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours, stating, "Modding is pretty big - we had more than a million mods installed in less than 24 hours." This was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported the number exceeding three million installs and still climbing, tweeting, "Just ticked over 3m installs and accelerating."
Patch 7 introduced significant new content, including sinister new endings, improved split-screen functionality, and the much-requested Larian-developed Mod Manager. This integrated tool simplifies browsing, installing, and managing community-created mods directly within the game.
Currently, separate modding tools are available via Steam, enabling modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. These tools allow for custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon for BG3
As noted by PC Gamer, a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (uploaded by modder Siegfre on Nexus) provides a comprehensive level editor and reactivates features previously disabled in Larian's editor. This release follows Larian's initial cautious approach to providing full access to their development tools; Vincke previously stated to PC Gamer, "We are a game development company, we're not a tools company," acknowledging player creative freedom while clarifying that not all development tools would be fully supported.
Larian aims to support cross-platform modding, a project currently underway. Vincke explained the complexity, stating, "It is not the easiest thing in the world because we have to make it work on consoles and on PC. We'll start with the PC version. The console version will come a bit later because it has to go through a bunch of submission processes. It also gives us the time to see whatever goes wrong and fix it."
Beyond modding, Patch 7 boasts numerous improvements: enhanced UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance optimizations. With further updates planned by Larian, we anticipate more news regarding their cross-platform modding ambitions.
