Fate/Grand Order's ninth anniversary celebration turned sour due to a controversial update introducing powerful new skills requiring significantly more "servant coins" to unlock. This angered players, who now need eight (or nine, to avoid extensive grinding) duplicate five-star characters instead of the previous six. This increase, following the introduction of a pity system, felt like a step backward to many.
The backlash was intense, with angry fans flooding social media with complaints, some containing graphic death threats against the developers. While understandable frustration is one thing, such threats are unacceptable and damage the reputation of the fanbase.
In response, FGO Part 2's development director, Yoshiki Kano, apologized for the dissatisfaction caused by the append skills. He announced several changes, including the ability to switch between unlocked append skills while retaining original skill levels, restoration of servant coins spent on Holy Grail summoning, and player compensation. However, these measures don't fully address the core issue: the scarcity of servant coins and the increased duplicate requirement.
Despite offering 40 free pulls as compensation, the developer's response feels more like a temporary fix. The eight-duplicate requirement for maxing out five-star servants remains a significant hurdle. The community questions the developers' commitment to past promises of increasing servant coin availability.
This incident highlights the precarious balance between game monetization and player satisfaction. While the immediate outrage might lessen, the developers must rebuild trust through open communication and genuine efforts to address player concerns. The game's success depends on a thriving community.
