Guerrilla Games' Horizon Multiplayer: A Million-Player Ambitions or a Preemptive Strike?
Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game is generating significant buzz, with recent hints suggesting ambitious player projections or, alternatively, a cautious approach to avoid launch-day server issues.
A recent job posting for a Senior Platform Engineer reveals a requirement for experience building and operating systems supporting over one million users globally. This strongly suggests Guerrilla anticipates a massive player base for their live-service Horizon title. This expectation is fueled by the continued success of the Horizon franchise, following Horizon Forbidden West (2022) and its Burning Shores DLC (2023). While Guerrilla has remained relatively quiet since then (aside from collaborations on projects like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures), job postings dating back to 2018 consistently allude to a Horizon multiplayer game, making its existence almost certain.
However, this massive player projection might not be solely about ambition. The disastrous server overload experienced by Helldivers 2 upon its release serves as a cautionary tale. To avoid a similar situation hindering player onboarding, Guerrilla could be proactively building a robust infrastructure capable of handling a substantial player influx, regardless of actual player numbers. While the Horizon multiplayer game's success isn't guaranteed to mirror Helldivers 2's, preparing for high demand is a prudent strategy.
Given the game's years-long development and a previous job listing hinting at a new Horizon release in 2025, the multiplayer project could very well be the title slated for this year's release. With the next mainline Horizon entry still some time away, a 2025 launch for the multiplayer title seems plausible. The coming months may reveal more about Guerrilla's plans and the scale of their ambitious Horizon multiplayer project.
