Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return
Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest has received an extension due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Initially slated to end January 6th, Game Director Aaron Keller announced the mode's continued availability until mid-season. Following this, it will transition from a role queue to an open queue format, allowing 1-3 heroes per class per team. The possibility of 6v6 becoming a permanent fixture remains strong.
The 6v6 mode's initial November 2022 appearance during the Overwatch Classic event highlighted its enduring appeal. A subsequent playtest, running from December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its popularity. This second playtest, while omitting some classic hero abilities, quickly became a top-played mode.
Keller's recent Twitter announcement confirmed the extension, promising extended 12-player matches. While the precise end date remains unannounced, the mode's imminent move to the Arcade section is confirmed. The open queue format, with its flexible hero composition, will launch mid-season.
Arguments for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The consistent success of 6v6 shouldn't be surprising. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, a return to 6v6 has been a frequently requested feature. The shift to 5v5 gameplay, while a significant change, hasn't resonated equally with all players.
The extended playtest fuels optimism for 6v6's permanent inclusion, potentially even within the competitive playlist. This possibility hinges on the successful completion of the ongoing playtests.
