Following significant player backlash, Spectre Divide developer Mountaintop Studios swiftly adjusted in-game skin and bundle pricing just hours after the online FPS title's launch. This article details the studio's response and the ongoing player reaction.
Spectre Divide's Price Cuts and Refunds Address Player Concerns
30% SP Refund for Early Buyers
Mountaintop Studios announced a price reduction of 17-25% across weapons and character skins, a move directly addressing player criticism of initially high costs. Game director Lee Horn confirmed the changes, implemented shortly after release. The studio acknowledged player feedback, stating, "We've heard your feedback and we're making changes. Weapons & Outfits will be permanently decreasing in price by 17-25%. Players who purchased store items before the change will get a 30% SP [in-game currency] refund." This refund is rounded up to the nearest 100 SP.
The price adjustments followed negative player reactions to the pricing structure, particularly the high cost of bundles like the Cryo Kinesis Masterpiece bundle (initially priced around $85/9,000 SP). However, the Starter pack, Sponsors, and Endorsement upgrades remain unaffected. Mountaintop Studios clarified that players who purchased the Founder's or Supporter packs and these additional items will receive the extra SP added to their accounts.
Player Response: Mixed and Ongoing
While some players welcomed the price reduction, the overall reaction remains mixed, mirroring the game's 49% negative Steam rating at the time of writing. Negative reviews flooded Steam, impacting the game's overall rating. Social media comments reflected this duality. One player on X (formerly Twitter) stated, "Def not enough but it’s a start! And it’s great that you’re at least listening to players feedback," suggesting further improvements are needed. Another player proposed, "I wish we could buy individual items from packs like hairstyles or accessories! You’d probably get more money from me tbh!"
Conversely, other players expressed skepticism and disappointment, particularly regarding the timing of the price change. One comment highlighted, "You needed to do that beforehand, not when people are upset about it and then you change it. If you keep on going in this direction then I don’t think this game will last any longer. Cause in future you will get heavy competition from other f2p games too." This underscores the ongoing challenge for Mountaintop Studios to regain player trust and maintain the game's long-term viability.
