Sony has announced the formation of a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which originated from Destiny and Marathon developer Bungie. This new studio is currently working on its debut game, an ambitious project that has garnered excitement from Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group.

The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' hints at a focus on social gaming. The studio's first game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game aims to foster a sense of friendship, community, and belonging among players.

teamLFG emphasizes creating immersive multiplayer worlds that players can enjoy and master for countless hours. The studio plans to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests, staying agile enough to respond to player feedback both before and after the game's launch. The goal is to create memorable moments and build a lasting community around the game.

The incubation project that evolved into teamLFG's game was spun out of Bungie during significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting around 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024. Amid these changes, 155 employees were integrated elsewhere within Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In related news, Bungie has recently revealed the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled. A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing for improvements to Destiny 2, indicating a positive impact from the parent company.
