Fallout Developers Express Interest in a New Entry, But Creative Freedom is Key
Several Fallout developers, including Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, have voiced their enthusiasm for contributing to a new Fallout game. However, a crucial condition has been attached to their willingness to participate.
The Need for Novelty
In a YouTube Q&A, Sawyer explicitly stated his eagerness to helm another Fallout title, provided he's granted substantial creative leeway. He emphasized the importance of defining project boundaries and the scope of his creative freedom. "Any project hinges on 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries?'" he explained. "What am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?" He further clarified that restrictive constraints would render the project unappealing, as the core motivation stems from exploring uncharted creative territories.
This sentiment was echoed by Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster. In an interview with The Gamer, Cain highlighted the necessity of innovative elements. "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new and different," he stated. "It was the game itself that offered me something interesting." He underscored that the allure of a new Fallout project would depend entirely on its novelty. "What's new?" he questioned. "What's different about it?"
Obsidian's Perspective
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also shared his desire to work on another Fallout game, should the opportunity arise. However, in a January 2023 interview with Game Pressure, he confirmed that no such project was currently underway. Obsidian's current commitments to Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 keep their development schedule quite full. While expressing a strong preference for another Fallout project before retirement, Urquhart acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the timing of such an endeavor.
