Since its record-breaking launch last year, *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* has continued to captivate fans, and much of that staying power can be credited to the tireless efforts of its passionate modding community. While modders have already delivered impressive enhancements, their latest achievement—unlocking 12-player co-op—may well be their most ambitious success yet.
Tom, better known as Warhammer Workshop and the creative force behind the acclaimed Space Marine 2 Astartes Overhaul, recently announced the arrival of this new multiplayer milestone. The gameplay footage he shared shows a group of players teaming up to take down a Tyranid Trygon Prime in what looks like an intense, large-scale PvE encounter reminiscent of classic MMO raid battles.
This kind of experience was previously thought unattainable, especially considering the base game’s limit of three-player co-op. However, thanks to the modding team's ingenuity—and with direct support from developer Saber Interactive—the barrier has been shattered. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about redefining what *Space Marine 2* can become.
“Honestly, I’m just in awe of Saber’s support for the modding community,” Tom told IGN. “None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon—but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do.”
It's important to note that the current release is still a test version—one that performs impressively, but not yet finalized. With twelve players in the field, the game’s original PvE balance becomes noticeably easier, which is expected given that Saber designed those encounters for far smaller fireteams.
Still, the modders are already building upon this breakthrough. According to Tom, the team is working on experimental modes such as prop hunt, PvP within Operations, and even "massive" horde mode expansions planned for when the official horde mode launches. Most intriguingly, they're also exploring full-fledged raid-style missions featuring massive bosses—mechanically complex and requiring true teamwork to defeat—with entirely new gameplay mechanics.
The *Space Marine 2* modding scene has grown into a thriving ecosystem, boasting around 20,000 active contributors in the primary Discord server alone.
“As both a modder and a player, it’s hard not to be excited,” Tom added. “Huge credit as always to the Saber team for not just making all this possible, but continuing to drop amazing content of their own too, without any of the usual predatory battle-pass nonsense we’ve come to expect in modern titles.”
Could this groundbreaking 12-player co-op mod hint at what’s in store for *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3*? It’s certainly an exciting time for fans of the series. With Saber confirming the development of a sequel and teasing “large-scale battles that are even more spectacular,” it’s not unreasonable to speculate that future titles may officially support larger co-op teams.
In the meantime, the modding community remains a vital part of keeping *Space Marine 2* fresh and engaging. And this latest mod stands as a shining example of what collaboration between developers and modders can achieve.
