Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
RGG Studio, the powerhouse behind the Like a Dragon series, is simultaneously developing multiple large-scale projects, including a brand-new IP. This ambitious undertaking is fueled by Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation, according to RGG Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama.
Sega's Bold Investment in New IPs
RGG Studio recently unveiled two exciting projects: Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, and a new Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. remaster). Both projects were revealed within a week, showcasing the studio's impressive output. Yokoyama credits Sega's culture of risk-taking for this opportunity, highlighting the publisher's willingness to move beyond safe bets.
Yokoyama explained to Famitsu (as translated by Automaton Media) that Sega's acceptance of potential failure is a key element of its success. He points to the creation of Shenmue as an example of this risk-taking ethos, born from the question, "What if we made 'VF' into an RPG?"
RGG Studio assures fans that the quality of these projects won't be compromised despite their simultaneous development. Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support for the new project, and the team, including producer Riichiro Yamada, is committed to delivering a high-quality and innovative experience.
Yamada emphasized the team's goal to create something "cool and interesting" that appeals to both existing fans and newcomers. Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, expressing his excitement for both titles and encouraging gamers to anticipate further updates.
