Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: A Rocky Start, But Hope on the Horizon

The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a turbulent launch, plagued by server issues, instability, and various bugs. In response, Microsoft Flight Simulator head Jorg Neumann and Asobo Studio CEO Sebastian Wloch released a video addressing player concerns.

The overwhelming player response exceeded expectations, causing significant strain on the game's infrastructure. Neumann explained that the unexpectedly high number of players overwhelmed their servers, leading to widespread problems. Wloch detailed the technical challenges, explaining that the initial login process relies on server data retrieval from a database with a limited cache. While tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far surpassed this, causing the system to buckle under the pressure.

Attempts to mitigate the issues involved restarting services and dramatically increasing login queue capacity. However, these temporary fixes proved insufficient, leading to repeated collapses and extended loading times. Players experienced frustrating pauses at 97% loading, often requiring game restarts. The missing aircraft issue stemmed from incomplete data delivery due to server overload.

The negative impact is clearly reflected in the game's overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews, highlighting widespread player frustration with long queues and missing content. Despite this rocky start, the development team emphasizes their commitment to resolving the problems. Their Steam page assures players that the issues are being addressed, allowing for a more consistent player inflow. A sincere apology for the inconvenience was issued, alongside a promise to keep players updated via various communication channels. The team expresses gratitude for player feedback and continued support.
